President Claudia Sheinbaum will meet this Wednesday at noon with representative of the business, labor and government sectors to determine the actions through which she will confront the imposition of 25% tariffs on Mexico by the US government, said Morena Representative Pedro Haces.
During his participation in the “2025, a year of risks and opportunities in labor matters” forum, Morena Representative Pedro Haces said that he will propose that Mexico imposes tariffs on China, above all because there is unfair competition “even in regard to the uniforms used in the maquila industry in the North of the country.”
“Tomorrow, I will propose the imposition of tariffs on China. In the maquila sector, they clandestinely bring in, and sell at 40 pesos, and without paying any taxes, a uniform that costs 60 or 70 pesos”, said the also leader of the of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) before representatives of Human Resources companies.
He called for unity and for providing full support to President Claudia Sheinbaum. “Never had a tariff been set at that level of percentage, but we hope that the US President will change his mind, but we are ready to close ranks with our President”, he said.
He maintained that, as per conversations held during the day with US Congress members, there is a possibility that these tariffs will be modified: “because they affect all of us and there is no doubt that their impact on employment matters will be huge, as there will no longer be investments.”
“I am worried about the loss of sources of employment, they are lost because companies leave and shut down; we will have a meeting tomorrow at 12:00 in a tripartite system in order to analyze what will be done.”
He also said: “Rest assured that Mexico is stronger than any tariff, the workers and businessmen must proceed hand in hand.”
The legislator announced that reforms on labor matters are coming; one of them, proposed by him, is the reform on tips which will benefit 700,000 workers that do not receive a salary. This proposal has already been approved at the level of commissions and will be voted on in the full session of the House of Representatives.
He also added that the reform on the work week of 40 hours is a fact, although he did not specify the date on which it will be discussed.
